Sapling

When I was thirteen
and for several years after
I spent most my time in my room
Gone in my mind
far away in my head
gazing at rooftops
but seeing instead
the drawings and dramas
which were not quite ready
for drafting upon empty paper.
Long tall girls with easy hair—
At thirteen I envied them so.
They had no worries,
or so it seemed,
to a kinky-curled tomboy
with driven dreams
of writing like Shakespeare
and being the next Michelangelo.
